School Designation
November 24, 2025
Dear Parent / Guardian:
I hope the school year has started successfully for all of you. As a parent / guardian of a student in Williston Middle School, I am writing this letter to let you know that Williston Middle School has been designated as a Comprehensive Support & Improvement Low-Performing (CSI-LP) school by the North Carolina State Board of Education. As stated in ESSA Section 1111(c)(4)(D)(i)(I), North Carolina had to identify schools for comprehensive support and improvement. CSI-LP schools in North Carolina are those found in the lowest-performing 5 percent of all schools receiving Title I funding. The intent of this opportunity is to improve educational outcomes for all students, close achievement gaps, increase equity, and improve the quality of instruction.
As a CSI-LP school, Williston Middle School is required to develop a comprehensive plan that specifically addresses how the school will improve student achievement. The plan will also include how our district will support us and monitor the progress of our school. This is a planning year. This is the time for the goals and strategies to be reevaluated and guide our work over the next three years of this designation cohort.
Parent engagement will be important to our school improvement efforts. Here are some ways we can work together:
- Make sure that both you and your student are aware of academic expectations set for your student this school year. A list of learning objectives in student-friendly language is available from your student’s teacher(s).
- Call Williston Middle School at 910-815-6906 if you have questions or concerns about your student or to set up an appointment to meet with a school staff member who will be working with your student.
- Make sure that your student is prepared and attends school each day.
- Monitor your student’s homework.
- Monitor the progress your student is making and attend meetings with your student’s teacher(s).
- Keep track of our Williston Middle School website and social media site.
- Join the Williston PTA.
If you have questions about the content of this letter, please contact Jo McDonnell at jo.mcdonnell@nhcs.net or 910-815-6906.
Sincerely,
Jo McDonnell, Principal

Williston Parent Family Engagement Policy
Title I is the largest federal aid program for elementary, middle, and high schools. Parents Right to Know
Dear Parents/Guardians,
Federal law requires school districts to notify parents of children attending a Title I school of their right to know the professional qualifications of the classroom teachers who instruct their child.
Additionally, as a recipient of Title I funds, we will provide you with additional information in a timely manner if you request it. Specifically, you have the right to request the following information about each of your child’s classroom teachers:
- Whether the teacher meets the state qualifications and licensing criteria for the grades and core academic subjects they teach.
- Whether the teacher is teaching under emergency status because of special circumstances.
- The teacher’s college major, whether the teacher has any advanced degrees, and the field of discipline of the certification or degree.
- Whether teacher assistants provide services to your child and, if so, their qualifications.
New Hanover County Schools is committed to providing quality instruction for all students by employing the most effective individuals to teach and support each student in the classroom. If you would like to receive any of the information listed above for your child’s teacher, please contact the school at 910-815-6906.
WIDA Testing Letter Sample
The Home Language Survey completed upon your child’s enrollment in our schools, shows that a language other than English is spoken in the home. Your child might be eligible to participate in the English as a Second Language Program (ESL). Our ESL Program serves English language learners by promoting fluency in speaking, reading and writing in English and supporting academic success at an age appropriate grade level.
To determine entrance to the ESL program your child must take the placement test WIDA Screener, a standard test of English proficiency. The WIDA Screener scores will determine if your child will be or will not be placed in our ESL program. If your child qualifies he/she will remain in the ESL program until becoming proficient in English and performing on grade level in all academic areas.
Through the ESL Program your child will receive the following services depending on need:
- In-class support (math, science, language, other)
- Scheduled ESL Classes
- Accommodations as needed (extended time, read-aloud, dictionary)
You will receive a letter to inform you of the testing results.
